Philosophy begins in wonder—at least, so goes the ancient maxim. Have we forgotten this basic sense of wonder towards the fact that anything at all exists, towards the fact of "being"? Why ought we think deeply about being? How do we undertake such an exercise well, that is, with a feel for wonder?
William Desmond, one of the great living philosophers, suggests that to think well about being, one must think in the "between". Desmond suggests that we humans live in an open middle; "to be" for us is "to be between": between the mortal and the divine, between ignorance and wisdom, and between oneself and others. Desmond's philosophy is, therefore, refreshingly open without relinquishing the quest for truth. In other words, Desmond's philosophy truly begins (and ends) in wonder.
