The “Virgin of the Passion,” also known as “Our Lady of Perpetual Help,” is one of the most ubiquitous and recognizable Christian devotional images today. Matthew Milliner traces the history and evolution of this beloved icon from the hills of Cyprus in the aftermath of the island’s conquest by crusaders, through the twilight of Byzantium, and into Italy and the Western Christian imagination. He engages with the image’s theological depth and masterfully reveals its lessons on political humility, co-suffering love, and an alternative vision of defeat and victory that remain deeply relevant to twenty-first century Christians.
