This reading group will be on Walker Percy’s most famous novel, The Moviegoer. In it, the main character, Binx Bolling, engages in a distracted and often desperate search for meaning. Binx attempts to either lose or find himself in the narratives of the movies he consumes, the banal job and neighborhoods in which he works and lives, and the “romantic” relations he seeks. “Insightful and romantic, gently humorous even as it plumps the depths of despair, it is a story of a young man’s search for meaning in that shallow consumerist world.” (From the back cover of The Moviegoer.) In many ways, Binx’s journey resembles the paths offered by contemporary society. Walker Percy is also among a distinguished echelon of Southern writers and Catholic novelists, and this reading group will also set aside a very small portion of time to learn more about the author’…
